Burke Co. mother fed up with school dress code rulings

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- One Burke County mother is fed up with her child getting punished for dress code problems.

"In a sense, you almost feel lost because you don't know what to do," said Lavonia Wilcox.

That's how Wilcox feels after her 12-year-old daughter who goes to Burke County Middle School was sent to in-school suspension twice last week because of what she was wearing.

"She actually had on a sleeveless dress with a vest on top," Wilcox explained.

The school handbook says students aren't allowed to wear sleeveless tops unless its a coat, jacket, sweater or sweatshirt.

"She came home later and said she was sent to ISS for it," Wilcox said.

She says the next day her daughter, DeAsia, got in trouble for wearing this outfit.

"I get another phone call," Wilcox said. "DeAsia's underwear are showing."

But Wilcox says it wasn't underwear, but that DeAsia was wearing a half slip underneath the skirt.

"I think what happened was her slip may have just went up or whatever," she said. "The only thing you have to do is allow her to pull the slip down -- easy fix."

Instead, administrators asked Wilcox to bring a change of clothes, but she wasn't able to and DeAsia was sent to ISS for a second day.

"If it's just her slip, why not allow her to pull it down and go to class?" asked Wilcox. "She has missed her learning for two days now because you want to send her to ISS."

Now, Wilcox is just hoping for some sort of compromise.

"Anything other than sending her to ISS," she said. "I've read your rules, I try to dress her presentable so we don't go down this road, but when you're calling parents just to talk about a slip, you have now wasted your time, mine, the students."

Officials from the school tell News 12 that when students are sent to ISS for dress code, it doesn't go on their record. They're only put there to be away from the general population.

*Footage of students is from schools outside of Burke County.
