AIKEN -- Kids are getting excited for school to start and are doing the "Countdown to Kindergarten" dance.
There's only 10 days left before North Aiken Elementary starts back up again. And for kindergartners who are about to go to school for the first time, it's a huge deal.
Thursday some youngsters and their families celebrated in style. It is part of the Countdown to Kindergarten summer program that helps kids transition into the school system, providing a chance for them to get to know the building and their teachers.
Christy Washington and her daughter Kayla Washington are getting ready for school, too.
"It's kind of nerve-wracking when she's never gone to school or daycare or anything," Washington said. "I think it is good for her to come to school, be able to meet the teachers and for me, too, that way when I'm coming into the school, I'm not like just leaving my kid with anyone."
Marcia Nash, director of Aiken County First Steps, enjoys the program.
"I think this program has given these kids the first step of getting into that classroom and saying 'That's my school' and 'I'm loving my school' and 'I'm ready for kindergarten,'" Nash said.
The program wasn't just today. Kids have been meeting with their new teachers throughout the summer.
