AUGUSTA, Ga. -- On Saturday, hundreds of ASU students will walk across the stage and become college graduates, but for Eric Truitt, the journey to graduation was much harder than most.

Truitt has two kids: a 3-month-old boy and an 8-year-old girl; he also works full time. He's balanced that with school for the past two years.

"I've carried four courses at a time, worked 40-plus hour weeks, traveled for business all over the world, and then on top of that, raised two beautiful children," he explained.

As one can imagine, those two children didn't get to see their dad much.

"I only get to see him like from the morning to the middle of the day, and usually after that I don't see him until the next morning," said Truitt's daughter, Amber.

Of course, that's all about to change Saturday at the James Brown Arena.

"The first thing I'll do is exhale for a few minutes," he said.

At 31 years old, Truitt is ready to breathe a sigh of relief. He tried the linear route of going to college straight after high school, but it didn't work out. He ended up serving the country for five years in the Navy. Then came his kids and a regular job, but the dream of graduating never left.

"I think you have a sense of honor from serving your country, and I think it gives you self-discipline and the courage to face any challenge that comes before you," he said.

Finally, that challenge is complete and can teach us a lesson that sometimes it's never to late to do something.
