AUGUSTA, Ga.---A reading program News 12 has been investigating for over a year is up for discussion tomorrow at the Richmond County school board.

Linda Schrenko, the former Georgia State School Superintendent, first helped Richmond County purchase the Voyager Literacy Program with a $1 million federal grant.

Since Richmond County put it in all elementary schools, spending more than $10 million on it, reading scores have been slipping--in some cases up to half to two-thirds of third graders aren't meeting state standards when it comes to reading.

You're invited to the school board's discussion of Voyager tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the board offices. News 12 will also be there.

I substitute occasionally for Richmond County. The Voyager program takes up way too much time and have the youngest students locked into doing the same type of work for hours. They need to weigh this program heavily. I hope it is not around when I start teaching.
