AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- GRU officials have admitted to not having approval from the Board of Regents to continue with a more than $75,000 upgrade to Dr. Ricardo Azziz's home.
The garage plans are drawn and the contract awarded to Veracity Construction.
News 12 has been told the Azziz family requested the upgrades because of limited event and entertainment space.
Twin Gables on 920 Milledge Road is a three-story home and is spread around 9,000 square feet, according to a local real estate agent. The property owned by the University System of Georgia, home to Dr. Azziz, and sits on just over 3 acres of land.
Upgrades are on the way because the Azziz family needed more event space for entertaining guests. News 12 received documents that show additions to the Twin Gables Garage Carport. The plans detail electrical changes and more space being added.
The price tag is more than $75,000. It could continue to climb if the Historic Preservation's Department has its way. GRU's public relations office confirms the construction plans have not been approved by the Board of Regents.
This comes just weeks after a weekend wedding held recently by the Azziz family. A shuttle bus, the president's home and four officers were indirectly part of the wedding. After public outrage, Dr. Azziz himself requested an investigation by the Board of Regents.
The school's name change and the sports team's vanishing logo is added to the list of students recent complaints about their president's behavior. The president's home is property of the University System of Georgia and new construction must receive approval from the Board of Regents.
