Richmond County School Board members admit it will be a long, tedious process to find a new school superintendent.

They held their first meeting setting ground rules on who will possibly conduct this important search.

It will take 6 to 9 months to find someone to fill the superintendent's seat and guide Richmond County schools and its $200 million budget.

"You've got to advertise, and then you get 200 applicants. You got to screen all of them, and then you have to decide who you are going to interview," says school board president Marion Barnes.

But how that process will be done is still debatable.

Board members are discussing whether to use the local board or an outside national agency to perform the search.

Barnes has been through searches like this before. He says, "We have not decided yet, but I think we are leaning toward going through the Georgia School Board Association to help us."

Hiring an agency like the Georgia School Board Association to perform the search comes with costs which will most likely be funded through the Board of Education's general fund.

"If they do it for the Southeastern region, it is approximately $7,000," Barnes says. "If national, it would be about $10,000."

Guidelines are now being set to decide if they will look for applicants with either specialist degrees or doctorate degrees.

Barnes says he just wants someone to move the system forward.

"It doesn't matter to me as long as they are capable of doing the job," he says. "I don't care if they are from this area, if they are black or white, female or male."

The Board of Education will hold a workshop on October 4 at 5 p.m. They'll continue talking about guidelines and whether to do the search in-house or use a national agency.
