People who live in District 3 for the Richmond County Board of Education have been without representation since May when board member John Seitz resigned.

But today, District 3 voters are at the polls to pick their new board member.

News 12 caught up with the candidates as they make their final trip on this campaign trail.

Poll workers spent the day waiting on voters. Of the 11,600 registered voters in District 3, only about 600 were expected to vote in 7 precincts.

"I think it shows a lack of interest," said voter Wanda Roper. "I think voting is a privilege."

"The Board of Education needs some help," said voter Harold Shapiro.

For most of the day the voting machines were empty, leaving the voters that did come out shaking their heads.

"I think probably some of the reason we have a problem is that we have 5% turnout expected," Roper said. "That's pitiful, really."

Richmond County Board of Education District 3 has been without representation since former board member John Seitz resigned in May.

Candidate Alex Howard spent the day making himself visible. He says he is ready to give District 3 some representation.

"I think the winner of this election should focus on two things: number one, finding a new superintendent, and number two, getting SPLOST approved," he told News 12.

Lauretta Gordon is also running for the District 3 seat. She says having five grandchildren inspired her to run.

"We need all the funding we can get in our school system as far as building, so they can come out of the portables," she said.

And while voter turnout is low, the two have a common goal: finding a superintendent and passing the penny sales tax.

Polls close at 7 o'clock tonight. You can catch the election results on News 12.
