Two brand new schools and one renovated school are ready to open in Richmond County.

Today, Dr. Charles Larke and school board members took complete tours of all of the schools.

"We have a long list of kids wanting to get into the magnet school," Dr. Larke said. "This new building will allow us to serve up to 850 kids in the magnet program at walker."

In addition to the new look of C.T. Walker, Richmond County has two brand new schools: Diamond Lakes Elementary School and Deer Chase Elementary, which is surrounded by the Farington neighborhood.

Board member Ken Echols says it brings a neighborhood and school together.

"I think when you have that, you have more community support and parental support, and that's key."

And with two new schools going up in South Richmond County, school officials say they can eliminate the use of portables.

"I think with these two schools we've gotten all of the elementary schools off of portable classrooms," Dr. Larke said.

"I think South Augusta Richmond County is really growing, and it says a lot that we are having to put schools, and we are probably going to have to put more," Echols said.

The fresh paint and cleanness surround second grade teacher Vonda Calhoun in her new room. Calhoun says her room is just about ready to welcome new students.

"I am really excited to be in a new environment, to meet new students, new faces, as well as new parents," she said.

And while minor work is still being done, Dr. Larke says the schools are ready to welcome students.

Now school officials are trying to get SPLOST III passed in hopes of building a new middle school.
