Some of you are already thinking of that first day of school. Believe it or not, some students start as early as next week.

News 12's Diane Cho is on your side with a look at what parents in Columbia County are doing to prepare.

Gearing up for school is a homework assignment all in itself.

"They're not ready to go back to school because of the weather," said Lee Davis, a parent new to Columbia County. "They can stay out late, go swimming, things like that. But I'm trying to get them back on schedule."

That's why University Healthcare System sponsors an annual festival at Evans High School to give parents a one-stop shop for back to school.

"We have physicians who are checking immunization requirements to make sure your kids' shots are up to date," said Rebecca Sylvester, spokesperson for University Healthcare. "Several things. Bus schedules, calendar year programs, registration."

Complete with BMI checks, interactive games to keep your kids healthy, and after school programs to keep your kids busy outside the classroom.

"We need to make doubly sure to get them out in the yard and exercising," Sylvester said. "And not that it's a chore, but that it's healthy and that families are doing it together."

For parents, it's a way to get the information they need.

"Just to find a little bit about the school year, the bus they'll be riding," said Debra Steele, a River Ridge Elementary parent.

And for kids start looking ahead to their futures.

"I can't wait to go back to school to do 4-H," said Jaeda Williams, a fifth grader at Bel Air Elementary.

"It's brand new, it's my first year, and I just know it's going to be a lot of fun. It's big, huge, all my friends are going to be there...just have a blast," said another girl.

If you haven't done so already, University Healthcare recommends talking to your child's doctor to make sure they haven't missed any of the new immunization requirements that may have changed in the past couple of years.
