From the daily grind at Fort Gordon to the daily grind in high school. Last month, Janet Hicks retired as Fort Gordon’s commander, taking a job at Augusta Prep. News 12 shows you how Janet Hicks is handling students of a different kind.

In the halls of Augusta Prep, there’s a new sheriff in town. Actually, it’s retired Major General and Fort Gordon’s commander Janet Hicks.

“The students are just typical high energy, high speed, low drag teenagers. But they’re very focused. Most of them know what they want to be in life,” Hicks said.

Hicks is the new head of school, or principal, of Augusta Prep’s high school. While leading 5,000 troops at the Fort, she’s now handling 180 high schoolers.

“All of them are young people on the verge of being full grown adults. These kids will just bring out the energy in you and they’re wonderful young people,” Hicks said.

So what’s the word on the street? Do students salute?

“I just call her Ms. Hicks or ma’am,” said senior Austin Smallwood.

“It was kinda mixed feelings before she came. I grew up in a military family so I knew what to expect. No pushups, but a really good leader,” said senior Lisa Higgins.

“Really easy to talk to and you don’t have to worry about her being too strict,” Smallwood said.

The third week of school for these two seniors, now at ease with Janet Hicks calling the shots.

And just last weekend, Janet Hicks went white-water rafting with the senior class on the Ocoee River. Just a few students were overboard, but we hear Ms. Hicks stayed put in the boat.
