AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Super 10 District Commissioner Grady Smith plans to attend the commission meeting on Tuesday. He's missed a few meetings due to illness.

Smith sits in his chair with his foot propped up in the air.

"I'm from the old school. If the bone isn't sticking out, then you ought to keep playing," Smith said.

He is in his 60's and his health showed it in the last year. Smith has had a broken arm, a triple bypass surgery, stints put in his heart and lost every single toe on his left foot.

"That's a shock when they tell you are going to lose something. I don't care if it's because you're going to lose a finger or a small toe. Everybody wants to leave this Earth with what they came.
with," Smith said.

His absence leaves his chair at the county commission empty. In 2012, Smith missed seven called and five regular meetings.

Can Smith still handle his duties as a commissioner?

"You can look at my wallet and see what the answer is on that. When you have leather touching leather, you better keep working," Smith said.

Since he can't walk, Smith plans to have someone carry him to the next commission meeting.

He says nothing, not even diabetes, will stop him.

"The way I look at it ... sure I've had a setback. This is temporary for me," Smith said.

Smith says he's determined to continue the fight no matter what.
