AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Having a functional transit system for all of us is number one on the Augusta Commission's list. Now there's a workshop planned to look at all sides of the issue.

Getting around depending on what side of town you live on is a problem.

"I think the time for talking was over six or seven years ago," said Downtown Advisory Panel Member Brad Owens.

Owens presented a project to bus soldiers and people from Fort Gordon to downtown Augusta. Owens says there are thousands of soldiers who don't have transportation.

"This would be set up as a public-private partnership with a nonprofit corporation. It would be sponsored by businesses paying the bill," Owens said.

"We have people that would love to work on Fort Gordon. But because they don't have transit, they cannot get to and from," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.

Some commissioners say they're tired of kicking the transportation issue down the road. A transportation study, a 2009 plan and even Monday's idea was sent to a workshop.

"It's people throughout this city and county that need transit on a daily basis. They also need it to run late hours," Lockett said.

Those in need will just have to wait. Commissioners voted to do a workshop on Owens' bus express plans.

"The question is how much, how soon and what are the best routes to go? That's what we'll be talking about," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

"So what we're going to do is go get all the data together. We plan to get businesses signed up and things like that. When we come to the table, we want something they'll like," Owens said.
