AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A demolition plan was approved Thursday night for a historic part of downtown Augusta, but it needs to come back with a post-demolition plan.

Earlier this year, the dental building near 12th and Broad Street burned for hours.

A structural engineer who analyzed the property said the post-demolition plan could include the total building or just the inside. On Thursday night, Augusta Historic Preservation Commission, part of the Planning Commission, gave the owner of the building 90 days to come up with a plan and said they will vote on it.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The fate of a historic downtown building could be decided Thursday night.

The dental building near 12th and Broad Street burned for hours in a couple of months ago. Firefighters had to rescue someone from the flames.

The building built in 1896 sustained so much damage it's not even safe to go inside. Officials said it also damaged adjoining buildings.

Historians said this is important because it's a major piece of history on a main road. They said it's almost like getting your front tooth knocked out.

"When the fire happened at the beginning of January, we pretty much were jobless for a little bit," business owner John Guanlao said.

Guanlao owns the Immaculate Ink Tattoo Parlor right next door to the building that caught fire in January. He said he was out of business for at least two months because of water and roof damage. Now, Guanlao's back and his next-door neighbors could be moving.

The owner of the building is requesting permission to demolish this building and came back with a plan of what to do with the space later.

Any building owner in the historic district must have permission to tear down any property, because officials said it could change the landscape in an area of town that already has a few empty store fronts.
