AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Secretary of State's Office is investigating alleged "vote buying" in the race for Richmond County sheriff.

"It's a distraction." said Democratic Party chairman Lowell Greenbaum. "That is all it is."

Republican Party activist Dave Barbee is not so dismissive.

"I don't know all the details ... neither does Lowell," Barbee said. "Once it becomes a legal matter, it is a legal matter."

The incident report tells the story. A woman attending a Richard Roundtree for sheriff event at the Dogwood Terrace Public Housing complex claims Jerry Lee Jordan approached her and promised to give her a car if she could find four other people to go with her to the polls and vote for Democratic candidate Roundtree.

State officials are now investigating.

"It came as a major surprise to me," said Jordan's wife, Cushena. "Because no one has contacted us."

Mrs. Jordan called into our weekly radio segment on 96.3 KISS FM with Fattz and Cher. She says her husband owns a used car shop called U Wanna Ride on Deans Bridge Road.

"Not one time did he say get four or five people, go vote and I will give you a car," she said. "She said I need a car, and he told her to get a down payment and come see him because she had bought a car from us before."

"How in the world did this get misconstrued as I'm going to give you a car if you vote for Roundtree?" we asked.

"That's what I'm trying to tell you," Jordan said. "This girl is crazy."

Latasha Nicole Moore filed the initial complaint.

"I pity the woman who made this complaint," Greenbaum said.

Moore is now refusing to speak to the media. She says she is being harassed by the media; meanwhile, the Jordan family pledges to clear their name.

"We are willing to take a lie detector test," Jordan said. "We are willing to do whatever it takes to go forward with her being prosecuted for filing a false report."

Jordan says her husband is currently in the hospital.
