AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- More changes could be coming to the new mandatory trash service in Augusta. Residents, and even some commissioners, are calling it garbage.

They just voted to add more exemptions.

"We pulled them all out thinking we would have Monday pickup," said Augusta resident Linda Furse-Williams.

"It's my understanding that we sent a letter and postcard to everyone," said Waste Management Director Mark Johnson.

Williams says that letter never came, and the new service is trash.

"I think they just made a grave mistake. They are trying to save money, and it's going to cost them money. They're going to have to go back to at least two days a week," Williams said.

"This is a bad contract. I didn't vote for it then, and I'm not behind it now. It's a poor disguise for a fee increase," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.

Mason says making people pay the same rate and taking away one day is just bad business. He says he wants to redo the whole thing.

"I plan to, and I hope I can get six commissioners who agree," Mason said.

"It's the game of the politics. We've done what we were told to do," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

Commissioners voted to do away with making people who are exempt have proof of other service. Anyone with a 200-foot driveway will now be exempt.

"Farmers who have 10 acres or more and with the gate program are exempt. They must have one residence dwelling which ties into the property," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

The trash talk continues.
