AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richard Roundtree has officially been sworn in as Richmond County's newest sheriff.
Roundtree took his oath of office Thursday morning on the steps in front of the Richmond County courthouse.
He becomes Richmond County's first black sheriff, replacing outgoing Sheriff Ronnie Strength.
He defeated Republican nominee Freddie Sanders in the general election last month and fellow Democrat Scott Peebles in a hotly-contested primary runoff in July.
News 12 will have in-depth coverage of the ceremony and of Sheriff Strength's last day in office tonight on News 12 at 5 and 6 o'clock.
