AUGUSTA, Ga. -- One by one, people are filing in to vote on Election Day. One of the biggest battles in Augusta is the race for Richmond County sheriff.
Republican candidate Freddie Sanders started off his day working at his law office where his extensive law enforcement background is on full display.
"More than anything in the world, I'm proud of this -- my father was a captain on the Sheriff's Department," Sanders said.
Sanders followed in his father's footsteps with badges ranging from road control to chief of police.
It's that background that appeals to voters like Herbert Ellis.
"Well because I think he is the most qualified," Ellis said.
"I'm proud that I passed the bar, but this is my heart right here," Sanders said.
Sanders also has the support of Sheriff Ronnie Strength.
"Without a doubt, you know who I voted for for sheriff and that was Freddie Sanders. He's been my friend for 40 years and he is qualified," Strength said.
