AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The battle between the city and Regency Mall might be ending soon. City leaders say property owners have made efforts to try to bring the building up to code.
City leaders are awaiting results from an asbestos test so the cleanup can continue. The city had to stop the mall from removing combustible items. They say the items should have been tested for asbestos in order to comply with federal law.
We just learned that property owners have had some testing done. It'll take a few weeks before we know the results.
A city inspector was sent out to the mall today.
"He will tell me what their doing, which doesn't involve testing. As far as work on the grounds, roof and securing the entrances," said Planning and Development Director George Patty.
Once the results are in from that test, the company will have the clearance to finish cleaning the property. The city's planning and development office will also update Magistrate Court Judge Allen on the process of the cleanup.
