AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta Commissioners are looking at raising the salary for two department directors and at least a handful of other employees.
They went over the plan in a closed door legal meeting. Thousands of city employees are way overdue.
"The people up here at this end. You know what let them all step forward and tell me who is not satisfied with their salary and I'll direct them to the front door," said Commissioner Grady Smith.
Commissioners are considering raising the salary of Procurement Director Gerri Sams by at least $30,000. Leaders are also considering increasing the new Human Resources Director Tanika Bryant's pay by thousands along with a few other city employees.
"When you get hired on for a job don't come in here 10 months later and tell me your salary is deficient. If you do that to me you are showing me your lacking up stairs," Smith said.
Last year the commission started budget talks with intentions of giving all 2,700 employees a $1,500 raise. The increase could've cost the city millions and was brought down to $500 dollars before it was cut altogether.
The lower level city employees haven't had a raise since 2011 or maybe even longer.
"We sit there and look at well I haven't had a raise in so many years. There's a lot of employees who haven't had a raise in years. If you look at the private sector we are still taking cuts in pay," said Commissioner Guilfoyle.
"Once the word is out and the cat is down the street you have to figure out how you are going to catch him. For some people you just have to say if you are not happy you got to go," Smith said.
Commissioners are considering raising a few salaries. No word on if the other 2,695 city employees will be a part of that discussion.
