AUGUSTA, Ga. -- It was standing room only in a meeting Tuesday afternoon with city officials and Cherry Tree Crossing neighbors.

Augusta Housing Authority officials took the time to explain what this means for the 389 families who live in the complex who could be moving out next summer.

"I'm just ready for something new. I feel like there was a lot of people in there. They are used to this, they don't want the change," said Lamonie Brown, who lives in Cherry Tree Crossing.

"I'm glad they are going to tear it down, but this should have been done years ago, you know, before I even moved in here, is the way that I feel feel," said Lolita Booker, who also lives in Cherry Tree Crossing.

The Augusta Housing Authority plans to demolish the entire neighborhood and replace it with a mixed-use development. The proposed deal would demolish the Section 8 housing neighborhood and replace it with a mixed-use development.

If the plan is approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, residents could be packing up as early as next summer because it would take up to nine months to a year to move everyone out. Residents would have to choose between taking a voucher for other housing or moving to another public housing complex.

The Housing Authority says they wants to meet with every family and that no one will go anywhere without a 90-day notice.
