AUGUSTA, Ga (WRDW) -- 20 year old Xavier Cooper remains behind bars after facing a judge for the first time Wednesday afternoon. Cooper is facing three felony charges related to Monday's shooting at Paine.

Cooper has several recent charges and other blemishes on his record but not everything in his history dealt with crime.

In 2012, Cooper signed on to play football for the Morehouse College Tigers in Atlanta. Now, a judge and jury will decide the next play for Cooper.

Just two years ago, Xavier Cooper signed a letter of intent to play wide receiver for Morehouse College's Football Team.

Now he could be facing years in prison. Cooper was in leg and hand shackles as he was escorted into the courtroom to face three felony charges. He looked around once at the handful people in the room before sitting and listening as Judge Steven Shephard read him his rights.

"You have the right to cross examine those witnesses. It means ask them questions. You have the right to subpoena your own witnesses to the court. You have the right to be represented by an attorney," said Judge Stephen Shepard.

Cooper doesn't have an attorney yet and Judge Shephard went on to say a public defender could be appointed to his case. Cooper is facing charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime and having a weapon on school grounds.

"It's alleged you made the assault upon another person at that time upon JaJaun Baker with a deadly weapon which was used offensively against that victim. It did result in serious bodily injury," said Judge Shepard.

In a news conference, Sheriff Richard Roundtree said the shooting between JaJaun Baker and Xavier Cooper could be a possible drug deal gone bad. Sheriff Roundtree also said Cooper was assaulted off campus several months before to this week's shooting.
