AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta commissioners are under the microscope for doing business on the side with the city. Documents show one commissioner alone has made more than $200,000 on city jobs.

Commissioner Grady Smith admits his company has been involved and that's a direct violation of the city's ethics code.

"Follow the money," Smith said.

These documents show that green paper trail leads right back to Commissioner Smith's company, Smith Brothers Mechanical Contractors.

"Ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law, but I righted it when I found out," Smith said.

Recently that's what he told us when he admitted to doing work on city contracts.

"There's been a lot more money received under contracts than what was originally spoken of," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.

"We received a copy of the local small business report. It's prepared every month showing all the subcontractors on the project," said Director of Augusta Utilities Tom Weidmeier.

"As a subcontractor, we're so far down the food chain, architects, engineers, project managers, and then it's dispersed to different subs," Smith said.

The city code says no official should participate directly or indirectly in the procurement of a contract.

Now commissioners must decide the next step.
