AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Republican candidate for Richmond County sheriff is back at work after emergency surgery.
On Saturday morning, Freddie Sanders' pit bull bit him in the face.
"... At five o'clock in the morning, I got up to let my dog out. When he came back, I always give him a treat," he said.
But that's when he says things took a turn.
"He was laying on the floor, and I think he might've thought we were playing or whatever but he lunged," Sanders said.
Sanders says he's still not sure whether his pit bull, Bear, bit him in the face or scratched him with his paw, but the injury led to surgery at Doctors Hospital.
"I had to go get stitches, wound up having some minor surgery, but it wasn't any big deal," Sanders told News 12.
He says he doesn't want people to think it was a vicious attack. He said his dog is a friendly one.
"If someone broke in the house and they had a cookie, he'd probably help them tote the stuff out to the car. I mean he's just a baby. That's all he is," Sanders said.
Bear has been a part of the Sanders family for 10 years. They got him from a rescue in Atlanta when he was a puppy.
"He thinks he's a lap dog. He jumps up in my lap when I get home and lays there, so it scared him as much as it scared me," he said.
Sanders says Bear realized what had happened when he saw the blood.
"He laid on the floor and was shivering after it happened and that broke my heart," he said.
Sanders says the accident only slowed him down for a day, saying, "Took me out of commission for a little while Saturday, and my wife was glad I had to shut my mouth for a little while."
But, now, it's back to campaigning and looking forward to November's election.
"I'm here, I'm back and at full speed ahead," he said.
Sanders tells us the surgery was minor and his scars should heal pretty quickly.
Sanders and Lt. Richard Roundtree will battle it out on Nov. 6 to see who will become Richmond County's next sheriff.
