AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta commissioners are looking over a new concept for downtown Augusta. The new project could include a new walkway, stairs and waterfalls around the James Brown statue on Broad Street.

Leaders still have to find money for the project, and it needs commission approval to become reality.

"The beauty on Broad Street has come along way when I started working here two years ago," said Augusta resident Felecia Baum.

She lives in Augusta and works downtown. Baum's in favor of improvements coming to the city's center.

"I would love to see them beautify the area even more to bring in out of town guests," Baum said.

"It's a great concept, and I would like to take it to downtown business owners and let them take a look at it," said Commissioner Bill Fennoy.

Commissioners Fennoy and Marion Williams, as well as Mayor Deke Copenhaver, support what's being called the Urban Veranda Concept. It includes an open area for sitting or walking, as well as covered parking, and even waterfalls surrounding a statue of James Brown. It's being well received all the way around.

"The city looks really boring down here. If you add things here, more people will come," said downtown visitor Charles Worley.

"This would only enhance what we have in existence. I think this is a great concept and would love to make this into a reality," Fennoy said.

This reality is going to take lots of green to make it happen.
