AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- When it comes to children, everyone thinks safety.
"It will expose someone who has been in different states," said Janie Davis, owner and operator of Children Unique in Augusta.
And she knows children all too well.
"Everyone loves children, but everyone can't work with children," Davis said.
Her daycare is one of many in the state of Georgia that will soon get some much-needed reinforcement in their hiring policies.
"Our goal is to keep children safe, to keep them happy and to give parents that comfort level that Children Unique is here to protect their child," Davis said.
That safety comes in a background check.
Right now, daycare workers only need one on the state level, but soon, they are going to need another one.
Fingerprint checks pull federal records for any potential daycare employees. The FBI checks them all to determine a person's criminal history nationwide.
"It's a major safety factor, for anyone working with children," she said.
Others, like Lt. Calvin Chew with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, agree.
"You make sure the person that's going to be providing for your child, has a clean record," Chew said.
And he says anything is possible.
"Somebody can slip through the cracks and the person who you hire might not be the person you want," he said.
But all Davis can continue to do is her job.
"If there's something out of place or something that needs to be corrected or whatever, it comes right out at me," she said. "When i know all the children are home with their parents, that when I whew."
The bill has been passed through the House and Senate and is now awaiting the governor's signature.
