More lighting, deputies, cameras could be coming to downtown Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- More lighting, cameras and deputies could be coming to downtown Augusta. Commissioners discussed having the administrator, the IT Department and Sheriff's Office come up with a plan.

All commissioners agree on one thing: Something needs to be done.

Recent events like a wild fight downtown and a couple getting attacked at the Riverwalk have commissioners considering their options.

"You can put all the cameras up in the world, but then the crime has taken place. It's too late and someone is already a victim," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.

"Why not hire more police officers on foot patrol? We have lots of Segways already that could be used from CADI," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

"I would like to see a little bit of everything. We need cameras, more officers downtown and better lighting," said Commissioner Mary Davis.

News 12 walked the Riverfront and found several light poles have non-working bulbs or at least didn't come out while we were there.

"Moreover, cameras in itself is not the answer," Mason said.

Richmond County Sheriff's Office has two deputies assigned to downtown and the Riverwalk area. One walks the Riverfront and the other rides a golf cart from the Savannah River, covering the rest of downtown.

"If you have more officers, it's going to deter you and me from doing anything wrong," Guilfoyle said.

"We need to cut some of the shrubbery and not give people a hiding place," said Commissioner Marion Williams.

A lot of options for commissioners to consider as they look for ways to make downtown a safer place.
