More 15% raises could be on the way

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- More Augusta city employees are asking for raises.

This time, three high-level employees are asking for a salary review and increase. The Finance Committee voted to give two of those employees a 15 percent increase.

First Sheriff Richard Roundtree, then Solicitor General Kelly McIntyre and now the Director and Assistant of the Richmond County Board of Elections Lynn Bailey and Travis Doss.

"It should not be based on positions but based on merit," said taxpayer Courtney Hatcher.

"We have not hired an additional person to deal with technology. They do it. So that's what I mean by increase responsibility," said Sam Lloyd, chairman of the Richmond County Board of Elections.

Lloyd asked for a 15 percent increase for Lynn Bailey, which means she'll go from making $76,500 to $88,000. Assistant Travis Doss will jump from $57,200 to more than $65,800.

"I think you have to look at the actual theory behind the increases. It's what we have done in the past to correct those things," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

"It does need to be for the rank and file employees and not just for the top," Hatcher said.

No raise for deputies or city employees, but department heads are asking for more. Probate Court Judge Harry James is also requesting a 15 percent increase. It would make his salary more than $125,000.

"I have got a letter from one of the other probate judges just late last week. He is asking for a review," Russell said.

Russell goes on to say even though the city is facing a $4 million shortfall, these few thousand dollar increases are not that uncommon.

"Most of the people here that did not receive increases are still doing the exact same thing they did two three years ago," Russell said.

Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle is suggesting a 3 percent raise for all city employees. He's asked the assistant finance director to look at how those numbers could be worked into the budget.
