AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Tax commissioners from several counties held a joint news conference in Augusta to help clear the air about a new tax.

The one-time vehicle title tax goes into effect on Friday, March 1.

Expect longer lines and wait times at the tax commissioner's office on Friday. They'll be using a new system to determine the title tax on any vehicle bought after March 1.

"I'm just confused and angry that they have instituted this," said taxpayer Evelyn Bobo.

Bobo is retired and in the market for a new car. She's upset about having to pay a one-time fee of 6.5 percent.

"I'm feeling like I'm going to have to pay a large amount in advance before I can get my registration," Bobo said.

"They're going to be times when mistakes are made. Those growing pains will happen. We will attempt to minimize that and this is a part of the process," said Richmond County Tax Commissioner Steven Kendrick.

Tax offices around the state are switching computer systems out on Thursday. It will be the first time staff will use the new software that will estimate the value of your car.

"The programming for the GRATIS system will make a lot of these decisions for us," Kendrick said.

"Right now we can only opt in those people who purchase their vehicles in Georgia. You have to have a Georgia title," said Columbia County Tax Commissioner Kay Allen.

Since the new title tax affects new car buyers, some are deciding to stick with the older cars.
