AIKEN, S.C. -- After a ten-year term with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, and a past dedicated to law enforcement in Aiken, Chief Deputy Dwayne Courtney has announced he's leaving the Sheriff's Office, under friendly circumstances, for another job.
Troy Elwell, who was most recently a Captain, will become the new Chief Deputy of Sheriff Michael Hunt. Lieutenant Eric Abdullah will assume the role of Captain left vacant by Elwell.
Courtney says Elwell will provide a strong youthful voice in the leadership of the Sheriff's Office.
Courtney's official bio says he began a career of public safety at age 14.
"After graduating from Aiken High School , he entered the U.S. Army and became a military police officer," it reads.
After his military service ended in 1982, Courtney joined the Aiken Department of Public Safety where he'd serve in various departments over the course of 20 years.
"In 1999, Chief Deputy Courtney became Captain of the investigations division," the bio reads.
In 2003, Sheriff Hunt made Courtney his Chief Deputy.
Courtney says his job will keep him in the area, and he'll still be only a phone call away to the men and women who see him as a friend or father figure.
