AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Richmond County Tax Office has a warning for you: Pay your property taxes. The office says they have given individuals extra time to pay because of the sluggish economy.

"It's important to pay your taxes. It's the way the city generates income. I think it's a good thing," said Mamie Burke.

Mamie and Donald Burke moved here from Brooklyn and bought property. Mamie says there is no comparing property taxes in Brooklyn to Augusta.

"Taxes are very high in Brooklyn. Here I think it's good," she said.

"It's just a way of life to pay taxes. Everybody pays taxes," Donald said.

There are more than 600 delinquent accounts in Augusta. Most are businesses, but a few are taxes on homes and boats. Richmond County is owed more than $1 million in property taxes.

"We want them to come in, sit down and talk with us. In extreme cases, we will do what we did with the plane," said Chief Deputy Tax Commissioner Chris Johnson.

Recently, the Richmond County tax commissioner seized a plane from a company that owed more than $90,000. The company wrote a check the next day.

"Georgia code gives the tax commissioner the authority to go out and do a constructive seizure," Johnson.

Johnson says you'll pay one way or the other.
