Augusta,Ga (WRDW)-----Money to continue building homes along Laney Walker Boulevard has just about run out. Now the Augusta Commission is looking to give out a $2.5 million loan to keep the project going.

"If the city doesn't continue, I feel like it's going to be a waste of the progress that's already started," said Homeowner Fredrick Neely.

Fredrick Neely just bought a house and the land it sits on from the city in Twiggs Circle. It's one of several projects to turn the Laney Walker area around.

"I don't think you can find a house in the county that look as good as these out here. I don't think you can find them anywhere here or in Columbia County," said Homeowner Frederick Neely.

Since 2008 the Housing and Community Development Department spent more than $8 million to buy up more than 200 lots and tear down more than 90 homes. City officials say they need to borrow another $2.5 million to keep construction going. The city says the money will be used to continue buying property, demolishing and building homes.

"First of all, we are going to have to listen to see exactly what he has done since we last talked about this. There were some issues with consultant fees. We need to see how much they're spending now in those unnecessary fees," said Commissioner Corey Johnson.

For Neely, he says he wants the city to finish what they started and make all the homes look like his.
