NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Cheryl Lyle and her neighbors in Walton Crossing off Five Notch Road are taking their concerns to North Augusta's City Council.

They say Five Notch Road is too hard to cross, especially because Walton Crossing houses people with disabilities. They came to News 12 a few weeks ago saying they want an electronic crossing sign placed on the road. Now, they're taking it to their representatives.

"We can not let this go. We have got to push forward," Lyle said.

North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones says the council went to the Department of Transportation before Walton Crossing was even filled.

"They turned the application down," he said. "That was four years ago."

Jones and the council showed Walton Crossing residents the exact application SCDOT turned down. He then suggested to Lyle and her neighbors that they contact the Department of Transportation directly.

"We will start on that," she said.

"She is a self-admitted bulldog," Jones spoke of Cheryl. "She's concerned. I mean it's a tough situation."

In the meantime, North Augusta Public Safety helps Walton Crossing residents cross Five Notch Road about 18 times a month.

Lyle and Jones say it can't be a permanent solution.

"We don't want to wait for a fatality or someone getting injured before we say, 'Oh, we've got to do something,'" Lyle said.

Jones also added that the council will submit another application for a crosswalk to the Department of Transportation.
