AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta commissioners are talking about raising your taxes.

It's all in an effort to balance the budget and hopefully bring in more than $7 million for the city. One group is taking to social media trying to get more property owners to pack the meeting and stop the increase.

Davis is cleaning her pool and says she's fighting to keep the city from cleaning her out.

"My house is paid for so I get it all at one time and have to pay it," said homeowner Lori Davis.

Davis pays more than $1,200 a year in property taxes and wants to keep it that way. Her group the Augusta Watchdogs is taking to social media asking all property owners to come out and speak against the tax increase at the public hearing.

News 12 asked, "Do you really think you can make a difference"

"Not if people don't show up. If folks in West Augusta and South Augusta. South Augusta has really taken the brunt of all of this since consolidation," said Davis.

Seven commissioners voted for the proposed millage increase of 1.75 mills that's about $60 more a year on a $100,000 home.

Two Augusta commissioners are weighing in on the nickels and dimes.

"I tell you this. I do a lot of things that a week later I think about and say it may not be a good thing. There is nothing wrong with changing your mind," said Commissioner Grady Smith.

"We are going to plateau on the property tax and we are going to have to cut sooner or later," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

City officials hope most of the increase will go towards filling the $5 million budget hole. They are hoping to get more money by paying employees to work instead of taking up to 3 vacation days.

Davis says city leaders should balance the budget without asking homeowners for more money.
