AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- If you live in the CSRA, after Richmond County answers your 911 call, it's transferred to the Goldcross Dispatch Center.

They have four dispatchers during peak hours answering calls and sending out ambulances.

CEO Vince Brogdon gave News12 a behind-the-scenes tour.

"This does all of our dispatch brains. It does all of the billing. It does all of the trucks," Brogdon said.

Augusta Fire Chief Chris James says the old contract with Gold Cross is outdated and needs improvement.

"We did not make the contract. The commissioners brought us the contract to look at and sign," Brogdon said.

One of the issues would require Goldcross to keep a minimum amount of ambulances available to respond to emergency calls in Richmond County.

"We do send the closest available ambulance. At any time in Richmond County, we can have 20 ambulances on duty," Brogdon said.

James oversees the ambulance contract and is responsible for making sure they meet their response times. He'd like an independent source to collect those numbers.

"When we get the call and it's transferred to us, everything is taped through our cad system. Anytime anybody has a question, they can come," Brogdon said.

"Currently the state says that we are co-zoned providers. It means the fire department ought to be able to run the same amount of calls we do," Brogdon said.

In the end, it's all about help getting to you just as fast as possible.
