AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- City leaders are trying to bring more people to downtown Augusta by teaming up with GRU.

"We're at home, because if your not 21 there's nothing to do. We just hang out with friends. We normally hang out in the UV," GRU student Alisa Veal said.

The cut of a ribbon symbolizes city and university leaders working together to bring more students downtown.

"I'm sure students will be coming here throughout the day. We have a concert at 6:00 and fireworks at seven. I'm excited about students and faculty coming downtown," Mayor Deke Copenhaver said.

"I think it's a great idea," Commissioner Bill Fennoy said.

GRU students and faculty are being transported by shuttle bus to Downtown Augusta. They'll get discounts, food and drink specials at more than 50 downtown hotspots. We talked with GRU students from Athens and Savannah.

"Not all college students are 21, where as in Savannah there's a lot of activities that go on downtown. On First Friday, we have live music going on in downtown Savannah," Veal said.

"I think downtown Athens is centered more towards UGA students. You'll see a lot more younger students. In downtown Augusta, you'll see a mixture of people," Kiayra Irwin said.
