Ga. lawmakers trying to increase gun rights

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- While President Barack Obama and some lawmakers are trying to increase gun restrictions, some Georgia legislators want to increase gun rights. The Public Safety Committee is reviewing a House bill that would allow guns in churches, schools and even bars.

Some local bar owners and college leaders say they won't support the bill or change their policy.

"We can't control what the laws are," said an administrator with Paine College.

Michael Summers, who works in the Operations Department for Paine College, says any changes to gun laws won't affect Paine College policy and that they won't allow students to carry guns.

"We are a small, liberal arts college here in Augusta, Ga., Methodist funded, and we are just not a proponent of that," Summers said.

And Paine College isn't alone.

"Beer and guns don't mix," said a bar owner.

Cindy Fiske, who manages a restaurant and bar in Augusta, says her business gives her a firsthand look at how alcohol affects people.

"When you mix alcohol with guns and somebody has too much to drink and tempers flare, I just think it's a bad situation," Fiske said.

And that's why Fiske says her bar has a clear policy.

"Guns have a place in society. It's just not inside of a restaurant or a bar," she said.

And the administration at Paine College couldn't agree more.

"There is no need for us to promote any type of behavior, as far as being able to carry guns and promote violence," Summers said.

And for those questioning the promotion of violence, Summers says he can explain.

"We feel that it promotes violence, for students to carry guns, not being certified or trained," Summers said.

After Monday's hearing with the Public Safety Committee, the bill must be discussed by the rules committee and can finally be put into law if passed by legislators at the state capitol.
