COLUMBIA, S.C. (WLTX) -- A CBS affiliate out of Columbia is reporting former Gov. Mark Sanford has proposed to his longtime girlfriend Maria Belen Chapur. They are citing an Argentinian newspaper, Clarin.
The front of the newspaper's social section carries the story. The article says the two committed last Wednesday at the Palermo Restaurant Bella Italy Grill.
The story goes on to say that Sanford put the ring in a bag and gave it to one of the waiters and then went to wait in the bathroom, asking the waiters to invent a good story for his girlfriend.
When Chapur arrived at the restaurant, one of the waiters gave her the bag with the ring in it and said that she had won the prize for being the 100th customer of the day. She opened the bag and found then ring and then Sanford appeared and asked her to marry him.
According to the paper, what followed was a long time of kisses, tears and emotions.
In June of 2009, the former governor "disappeared" for six days, his staff said that he was hiking the Appalachian trail.
When he returned he admitted that he wasn't hiking, but that he had been having an extramarital affair with Chapur, an Argentine journalist.
The two met, according to Sanford, in 2001 at an open air dance in Uruguay and became friends and the relationship became sexual in January 2009.
Sanford and ex-wife, Jenny, got divorced in 2010.
