AUGUSTA -- A Virginia-based university is taking legal action against the new Georgia Regents University.

On Wednesday morning, Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., announced it has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents, Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University for the name of the "New U."

In a news release, Regenet University President Dr. Carlos Campo said, "Regent University has consistently taken steps to protect its trademarked name. We have respect for the Georgia Board of Regents, but we believe that their selection of the name Georgia Regents University is an unfortunate infringement of our valuable federally registered trademark."

Regent University officials claim they had tried to work with the Georgia Board of Regents to resolve the issue and that they hope this filing will lead to "a resolution that will avoid further legal action."
