Augusta,Ga (WRDW)---Augusta Commissioners are just now putting together evaluation forms for high level city employees. They are also making plans about what would happen if say, one of those employees were to be fired.
On camera officials say this is not about one person, but sources tell News12 it's about City Administrator Fred Russell.
Is City Administrator Fred Russell meeting expectations, exceeding expectations or performing below expectations on his job?
"I could pick one if i had to, but since I don't I won't." said Commissioner Marion Williams.
"We're not talking about anyone in particular. We just want to make sure our direct reports are doing their job. They're working for 10 commissioners," said Commissioner Mary Davis.
Human Resources Director Tamika Bryant presented the plan to commissioners, which included evaluations, succession plans, policy updates to the procedure manual for city employees.
It includes new evaluations for some of the top jobs in the city, those who report directly to the commission like the City Attorney, Administrator, Clerk, DBE and EOE positions.
"It's been important for as many years as they've been on the job. I'm glad we are finally implementing this," said Commissioner Mary Davis.
"The political will has not been there to go ahead and look at those things. We've been going along like everything is fine and that's not the case," said Commissioner Marion Williams.
In the past 6 months, three commissioners held a no confidence vote on the City Attorney Andrew Mackensie. Others have publicly criticized Fred Russell's decision making skills. The new evaluation plan could be the path to creating a paper trail.
Commissioners will hold a work session in the coming weeks identifying goals they want certain employees to reach.
