AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The race for House District 127 is getting hotter. Another candidate has officially announced plans to run for the seat vacated by the late Quincy Murphy.

One of his friends, Dr. Diane Evans says if she's elected, she'll fight for more education dollars. "It was just really so devastating. Everybody came together and that's the unity, I feel we need and have. We need that in House District 127," said Evans.

Evans is a retired teacher and mother of two who grew up in Jefferson County. She's a pastor of a church and and now serves as the chair of the Jefferson County Democratic Party.

"I'm the person who will bring in the stray dogs if you will. I'm not comparing people to dogs, but I want to be the voice of the people," said Evans.

She addressed and honored the work of Former Rep. Quincy Murphy. Her platform includes improving education, protecting seniors and trying to improve the area's high unemployment rate.

"Although I can't bring those jobs back into the community, but I can work by side with others to to identify infrastructure needs," she said.

Evans even touched on international politics, weighing in on the debate over a potential war in Syria. "I do not agree with war in anytime, but if there's a way we can negotiate with the U.N. then that's the approach," she said.
