AUGUSTA, Ga (WRDW) -- The wheels are turning behind the scenes in an effort to add an extra bus route to Fort Gordon. City officials are working with Fort Gordon to develop a plan.

"It's going to be hard to get a bus past that gate especially with all the security measures, they have on Fort Gordon," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

"This is not about cab drivers. This is about soldiers and this is serious. They are very important to what you and I do," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.

Several questions remain on adding the extra route to Fort Gordon. How will this effect the cab company that has an exclusive contract with Fort Gordon?

Will security checks for bus passengers be an issue? Last but not least, how will the city pay the $300,000 cost of adding a new route?

"When you start looking at the effect it's going to have on your local taxi service that's already out there. The other side to that is where will we get the funding?"

"There will be soliders and civilans who will still take a Taxi because, they don't want to ride a bus. There is a need for those who need to ride the bus. If there wasn't a need, we would have never been brought to these discussions in the first place,"

It's said that the Cyber Command and the hundreds of jobs will change the post and surrounding area. It's also another reason some want riders to have access to what's happening.

"You're talking about 4,000 jobs created which will bring 10,000 additional people on that post. No one is saying that we don't need cab drivers," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.

"You're getting into what if's right about now. 95% of the people drive their own personal vehicle."

The wheels are still spinning on this issue. Commissioners will receive a final report from Fort Gordon on the feasibility of this issue.
