AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An abandoned hotel on the far end of Broad Street is about to get a makeover worth $7.5 million. Construction to build a new Holiday Inn Express will begin in March.

We're talking about the old Regency Inn, which has become an eyesore downtown.

If only the peeling pant and empty rooms could talk. The old Regency Inn was a bed and breakfast, but it's seen better days.

"I feel good about the project," said Holiday Inn Express Owner T.R. Reddy.

Reddy says he plans to turn this dilapidated building on Broad Street into a Holiday Inn Express. It took him three years to get here and is costing him millions to do it.

"The TEE Center doesn't have enough rooms to rent for big conventions. We will be filling that gap," Reddy said.

"I just think it's wonderful. This eyesore is being turned into something that's going to benefit the city," said Commissioner Bill Fennoy.

"We will start around the first of March, and we hope to be complete by the end of the year or Jan. 1," said ACC Construction Owner Mason McKnight.

McKnight will be overseeing this project. It's a massive project that will also create more than 100 jobs.

"The five-story structure behind us, the concrete will stay. The front structure of the steel will stay. It will be a whole new complete building," McKnight said.

"This is going to be a good acquisition. This is going to create some jobs. It's going to change the interest in Augusta," Fennoy said.

One eyesore down, but there's plenty more to go.
