AUGUSTA, Ga. -- News 12 is following a developing story on Augusta's new convention center.

We have just confirmed in the last hour that up to three commissioners, members of the grassroots group City Stink and Marriott managers held a meeting today. The convention center will open soon, and there is still no formal management agreement.

The impasse has already cost the center two contracts with the Georgia Chiefs of Police Association.

"This is not an isolated incident," said former Augusta Mayor Bob Young. "It goes back to the fact that the city never negotiates contracts from a position of strength."

Sources tell News 12 a compromise could be in the works. Negotiators want the Marriott to drop the 15-year agreement to at least five years and kill controversial bonuses for workers. The center is expected to lose more than $900,000 in the first year.
