The Inside Story: Commissioner Corey Johnson expected to be next mayor pro tem for Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Commissioner Corey Johnson was asked, "Why are people so hard on you, Mr. Johnson?"

His response: "Because I'm great. I'm going to be honest with you because I'm great."

Those confident words coming from the commissioner on News 12's "The Inside Story" on 96.3. He says he can back that statement up with his record of accomplishments.

And the "powers that be" must agree, because many commissioners say they are expecting the self-proclaimed "great one" to be voted Augusta's next mayor pro tem.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver also says he fully expects Johnson to win the vote in January when the new group of commissioners take office.

"One of my colleagues came to me, and he actually made the motion that he was going to nominate me -- Joe Jackson -- and I said, 'Joe, I really appreciate that. If we can get the votes, I will definitely serve, and I look forward to it,'" Johnson said.

Commissioner Bill Lockett's name has also been thrown around as a possible candidate for the position, but we are told he has withdrawn his name for now.

"I'm up for the challenge, and I think I'll make a great mayor pro tem, and if we can get the votes in January, I'm looking forward to it," Johnson said.

The mayor pro tem fills in when the mayor is absent, and the position also comes with a pay increase. The final decision will come in January.
