AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The race for mayor of Augusta has unofficially started and one Augusta Commissioner is running for mayor on a 10 point advocacy plan.

Commissioner Alvin Mason says the issues are from the people and a few he's already started working on.

We sat down with him as he explained why he wants to be the next Mayor of Augusta. "The people have asked me to be mayor. There was a time when I wasn't thinking about that," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.

Commissioner Alvin Mason just signed a nine month lease for his campaign headquarters on Tobacco road.
Commissioner Alvin Mason is running on a 10 point plan. Number one on that lists is more commercial and retail development in South Augusta.

"Right now, we're filled with lots of family dollars, and dollar generals. We want some places where we can go and actually shop. We also need more places to eat,"

Riverfront development will play a huge part in commissioner mason's 10 point advocacy plan. He wants to take the levee down to 140 feet.

"This is part of what the people have asked for and two it's pleasing to the eye. If you're standing at the Augusta Canal, you can't even see across the river into North Augusta," said

Creating a college entertainment district, connecting with neighboring counties and making a better transit system are just a few of his priorities on his to do list if he becomes mayor.

"First and for most these are things, I've already been working on. If you recall I've been a very strong advocate of a comprehensive and robust transit system. I would not stop them simply, because I became mayor," said Commissioner Alvin Mason.
