AUGUSTA, Ga. -- As a bulldozer ate away a dilapidated home in Augusta, neighbors said goodbye to just one of hundreds of eyesores in the city.

"It's just ugly, it's gross looking," said Lindsey Shockley, who has lived next to the abandoned home for nine years.

Shockley says the property didn't attract anything good.

"There have been some not-so-friendly people who have shacked up there. And done not-so-great things," she said.

It was a similar story across town as construction workers hauled off another abandoned home.

"People's going in there doing all kinds of bad things and stuff like that, it's good it's gone," said Robert Rodgers, who lives next door to one of the torn-down homes.

The city is in the process of demolishing dozens of these homes, and officials say they hope to continue demolishing even more next year.

The cost for the project is about half a million dollars.

"The county bids them out and there were 40 to 50 of them the last batch," said Bob Chaplin, owner of Chaplin and Sons. "There's a lot of work out there."

Local companies like Chaplin's are happy for the business, and by the end of the year, they will have demolished 22 properties.

"Done a lot of them and looking forward to doing a lot more," he said.

But what happens next to the empty lots?

"They go into the land bank and are hopefully recycled in a manner that we can put some new houses there eventually," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

As for the neighbors, they are just happy to see them gone.

"I'm glad it's gone. Makes the neighborhood look better," Shockley said.
