AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) On September 11th, 2001 lives were lost and lives were also saved. Ordinary people took on extraordinary tasks.

Augusta leaders honored many heroes in the past and present of the 911 attacks.

Richmond County Firefighters rush from a 911 ceremony to an emergency. Their brothers in places like New York, Washington and Pennsylvania heard the call and did the same 12 years ago.

"It's a day, I will never forget. It's a day I live 365 days a year," said 911 Survivor Wayne Gooden.

"Everybody in the building, we grabbed a television and put it in the lobby. We sat there all day long. It was so surreal," said Business Owner Helen Block-Adams.

Richard Nogan and Wayne Gooden saw the devastation first hand. Nogan was a New York Firefighter and Gooden worked in DC. Gooden says God told him to step outside the pentagon and make a phone call.

"I went out on the mall plaza instead of going to the red skins lounge for breakfast. if i hadn't i might not be here today."

In New York, Nogan and his crew of firefighters rushed toward the towers.
He says it was almost impossible because of the thick smoke and debris to find survivors, but it didn't stop him from trying.

"It was so much rubble, it was hard to find anybody. It was very few alive but some rescued. It was really difficult to find people," said Nogan.

Dozens gathered at the Augusta Common to remember those who died and celebrate the unbreakable American spirit.
