City Council of Waynesboro approves Sunday alcohol sales

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW) -- You will now be able to buy alcohol on Sundays in Waynesboro. And that quadruple rate hike so many were worried about? It's not going to happen -- at least for now.

"I think it's a great idea," said Paolo Ortiz, who manages Camino Real Mexican.

Ortiz is one happy guy tonight. After voters gave the green light for Sunday alcohol sales in Waynesboro, the City Council also gave it the thumbs up.

Council member Bill Tinley was the only one that voted against it. He says that he isn't a drinker anymore, but if you are, you should plan ahead.

"I had sense enough to buy on Saturdays, and I usually decided when I ran out that it was time to quit," he said.

Ortiz says the added revenue will be a benefit for the city and can help with the unemployment.

"You know, I'll probably add another waiter into Sunday. It will bring a little more jobs into the city. I know some of these restaurants would love it, too," Ortiz said.

While Sunday alcohol sales breezed through, others had a tougher time. In fact, Mayor Pauline Jenkins had to cast her deciding vote twice because of two ties. She voted yes for a $50 fine when council members speak out of turn.

"I've always said that was a gang order for the council," said Councilwoman Portia Washington.

Washington says she's being picked on.

"Mrs. Washington is the target. I ask too many questions. I don't get enough answers, so they are going to gag Mrs. Washington," she said.

However, Mayor Jenkins says this has nothing to do with any member in particular, and everything to do with making each meeting run smoothly.

"As the leader, I have to have some sense of order in a meeting and that wasn't being done," Jenkins said.

As for Ortiz, he's more worried about making money than fining leaders. He says those leaders made the right move when it comes to Sunday sales.

"Being how the market is and everything, it would bring a lot more jobs in," he said.
