AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The high grass and blocked windows show a grim life at Cherry Tree Crossing.

Residents there are ready for change.

"The part that I live in is OK, but it's time to move. I'm ready to go and get on with the future," said Cherry Tree resident Shrene Hightower.

She has lived there for years. Hightower and dozens of her neighbors learned more about what's next for the complex at a meeting Thursday morning.

"I loved to move because I'm tired of those stair steps," said Cherry Tree resident Sydney Carter.

The Housing Authority officials hope to turn the area around.

"They should have thought of this maybe five years ago," said retiree Thomas Crawford.

News 12 has learned leaders could sell this property once everyone is moved out and mixed-income housing will take its place. Officials say it could be very similar to the manicured lawns, walking paths and sitting areas like legacy at Walton Oaks.

"They give us what we need. They come and repair everything fast," said Walton Oaks resident Harold Harvey.

Before this can happen, these tenants have to find a new home. They'll receive help like moving expenses and reconnection fees for some utilities, but could have to pay their own deposits.

Commissioner Marion Williams says choosing wisely is important.

"When you elect to move to south Augusta with no transportation, I hope they're thinking about that. I hope they move into a spot where they can grow," Williams said.
