Blue Cross Blue Shield addresses complaints from Augusta employees

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia has responded to complaints from Augusta-Richmond County employees who say they have been told their group numbers are invalid.

The company says the problem stems from a system change that caused insurance files not to load into the new system.

Below is an email from Blue Cross Blue Shield about the situation:
You may be aware that employees of the City of Augusta have encountered problems with using Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance at their doctor's offices and at pharmacies. This announcement will explain what is going on and how we need to deal with it.

What is the Problem?

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) changed their systems at the beginning of 2013. Unfortunately, this caused a ripple effect, which resulted in our employee insurance file not loading into the new system. This file is sent to BCBS from ADP, and those two companies are working on the solution. HR has been in contact with representatives from both companies to get them to expedite the solution. We have been informed that they are working on a solution but no definitive time is available when it will be fixed.

Things You Should Know:

  • You DO have health insurance.
  • Your current BCBS card is not valid, but you should keep it until you get a new one from BCBS in 7 to 10 days.
  • The temporary ID card flyer information that was sent out on Monday, December 31, 2012, is invalid because of the system problem mentioned above.

How can I go to the Doctor or get my Prescription?

  • When you go to the doctor, provide them with the attached document (the letter from BCBS) which has our correct group information on it. They can call BCBS to get verbal confirmation that you have insurance.
  • To get your prescriptions, provide your pharmacist with a copy of your current card and the attached letter. Have the pharmacist call the Pharmacy Services number on the letter to get verbal confirmation that you have insurance. This is acceptable to most pharmacies.
  • If you have to pay out of pocket, you can file a claim to get it reimbursed at the rate at which it should been paid if there had been no problems.
